Microsoft Acquires GoldED+

Move Eases Integration to Fidonet for Customers

REDMOND, Wash. -- Apr. 1, 2005 --
Microsoft Corp. today announced it has acquired the GoldED+ message
editor from Alexander Aganichev, a leading provider of Fidonet message
editor for MS DOSR-, WindowsR-, OS/2R-, and x86 UNIXR--based computing.
By deploying supportable Fidonet software from Microsoft,
customers can easily integrate to Fidonet network while leveraging
investments in their existing integration to Internet networking.
In addition, Microsoft's Fidonet mail editor will enable
companies to use obsolete hardware for message exchanging, thereby
reducing hardware capital expenditures and operating costs.

"Our customers told us they wanted a best-of-breed Fidonet technology
that enables them to excahnge with their legacy mail system,
even as they migrate to more modern operating system technology," said
Bill Veghte, corporate vice president of the Windows Server Group at
Microsoft. "With this acquisition, we are committed to delivering this
solution for our customers and providing the support they need both
today and in the future."

"This agreement will enable advances in Fidonet technology
and applications through expanded resources for research, development,
professional support and services," said Alexander Aganichev, maintainer
of GoldED+. "We look forward to working with Microsoft to provide
a seamless product and support transition for our current customers and
believe that Microsoft will produce the very best-in-class
Fidonet technology solutions on x86 platforms for a long time to come."

Fidonet Technology Solutions

FidoNet is a point-to-point and store-and-forward email WAN which uses
modems on the direct-dial telephone network. It was developed in 1984, and
has over 30,000 public nodes worldwide. Although originally based on MS-DOS
hosts, it has been ported to environments ranging from UNIX to the Apple.
There are gateways from FidoNet to the Internet, usually via the uucp
network.

"Adding Fidonet technology support to its product portfolio is yet
another example of Microsoft's continued commitment to the respective
users," said Ward Dossche, International Coordinator of Fidonet network.
"For years, GoldED+ was the most powerful mail editor in the Fidonet world.
We're glad to see GoldED+ go into such good hands."

GoldED+ provides support for most modern message base formats, able to
read configuration of modern and legacy tossers."

Product and Support Availability

The transaction was completed as of Mar. 28, 2005; specific terms of
the agreement were not disclosed. Microsoft will continue development
of GoldED+ from Alexander Aganichev and will integrate them
into the existing product portfolios. During the transition
period, Alexander Aganichev will continue to support GolED+ for free.
GoldED+ will be available as a preview release on the MicrosoftR Web site
April 15.
